Who do I want at the table?
Jared over at the gospel-driven church has added a great post. Please go read it here.
In past posts I have discussed this idea of rewards. Rewards for prayer and rewards for giving.
In Jared's post he used the following verse:
"He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."-- Luke 14:12-14"
I have discussed (and it has been commented) that it is a heart matter. what is interesting is I have gotten hung up on "doing things with the right intentions" because I think to myself that I am not capable of doing that. The answer of course is I can't.
Romans 7:4"Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God."
what is great about the passage in Luke is Jesus is showing us in one way how we can do this. Give to the poor who can't give back. He also tells us to do it in secret so that your praise does not come from man.
I am trying to think of the last time I had people over and the people I invited were people that were poor, crippled, lame, or blind. oh, that's right I have never done that. Maybe you say "that's metaphorical. fine, I have never metaphorically done that.
why not? I think I know the answer and I don't like it.
